Learn how overpayments and underpayments are handled when processing Super payments.
These fall into two categories:
1. You pay too much/too little to Beam
If you pay by BPAY, it is generally impossible for you to overpay your super amount due to a validation step on the total.
If you make an electronic funds transfer for an amount less than the total super payment amount, you'll see an "Outstanding Amount" in Easy Business App and will see payment details to make up the difference. Note that until the full amount has been paid no super is transferred to your employees' funds. Payments will be cancelled (and you will be refunded) if the difference is not paid within 5 working days.
If you transfer more than the super amount, the super will be paid to your employees' funds and Beam will refund the overpayment amount into your nominated refund bank account.
2. You edit a payslip after paying super
If you edit a payslip after you have made a Super payment and any of the super totals on that payslip change, you will have a super shortfall/overpayment. The payslip will appear again on the "To Pay" tab allowing you to process it.
If you owe more super to your employee
You will see the difference owed on the "To Pay" tab. Simply select the employee payslip and make an additional super payment. Note that partial payments received after the super deadline may attract the Super Guarantee Charge (SGC). Learn more about how to calculate and pay the SGC, or speak to your bookkeeper or accountant.
If you previously overpaid super to your employee
You will see a negative difference in the "To Pay" tab. As it is impossible to "claw back" erroneously overpaid super, the next time you are making a super payment for that employee for future payslips, simply select the negative value payslip along with their other payslips to reduce the total future super payment accordingly. If the employee has already been terminated (i.e. you have completed a final payslip and there will be no more payslips created) you will need to contact the employee and their super fund directly — simply mark the payslip as "Ignored" in this circumstance. Speak to your accountant if you have questions around this, especially if the overpayment was from a previous financial year.
